Why did you choose Central?

I first discovered Central when my sister Jensen Smith decided to come here and I thought there was no way I’d ever end up at a small college! I chose Central because I knew it was the right fit for me. I wanted a small school where I would be able to actually know my professors and be included in my own learning. After meeting the wrestlers on an overnight visit, I instantly felt like Central was home to me.

Favorite professor and why?

Tough question but no doubt Professor Huisman is my favorite professor. He’s a relaxed guy who makes jokes while he teaches. Plus, on Fridays he plays funny videos before class.

You’re majoring in exercise science because?

I enjoy studying the human body and this major combines my love for sports and exercise with the background to be passionate about my work. I am hoping to go to physical therapy or nursing school later on and Central gives me a great opportunity to do so.

Besides athletics, what else are you involved in on campus?

I am involved with Turning Point USA and Rugby Club.

Who are your go-to musical artists?

My taste is so versatile. Most people know I love Travis Scott, Denzel Curry, and Kid Cudi but my guilty pleasure is Adele. I also listen to the Black Eyed Peas, Chris Stapleton, and the Scorpions a lot!

How has attending Central and playing a sport impacted your life?

Being able to wrestle as well as get a quality education that would set me up for my future was important for me and Central has exceeded my expectations. Wrestling here has given me memories and friends that will last a lifetime. I’ve had more fun doing what I love than I ever thought I would and I think Coach Van Kley and the entire Central Wrestling family has made my time here more than worth it.

What is the oldest thing you own?

I have an old Derrick Lee jersey from when he played for the Chicago Cubs my parents gave my sister and I to wear when I was 5 for a family photo shoot.

Favorite wrestler of all-time

My favorite wrestler is probably Tony Ramos. I started wrestling in 7th grade and saw him wrestle at Carver Hawkeye Arena and he caught my eye as someone I wanted to be like. He was really exciting to watch and tough as nails.

Would you rather have more time or more money?

More time for sure. There aren’t enough hours in the day to do everything and life is short. Plus if I have more time I can spend that time making money.

Who would play you in a movie about your life?

I’d like to say Leonardo DiCaprio but I know I’m more of a Adam Sandler type of guy.

Favorite TV Show

I’m not a big TV guy but either The Office or That 70’s Show. They’re both hilarious and I love that I can watch them without paying too much attention. I also love Last Chance U on Netflix.

What’s it like to wrestle for Coach Van Kley?

Wrestling for Coach Van Kley has been amazing. Right from the beginning, he valued me as more than just another wrestler, but as a person. I’ve learned a lot from him and he’s definitely changed who I am as a person for the better. It’s been a fun experience and I’ve even learned a new word: “Deebeedee” or “DBD”. I’m really not sure how you spell it or the meaning but I say it at least once a day.

What’s your favorite part about being a member of Central wrestling?

My favorite part of being on the team is the friends I’ve made and the hard work I’ve done. Nothing builds better friendships than working harder than ever during a Van Kley practice when he brings coffee. Win or lose, I know I’ve got 50 guys who have my back through it all.

What do you hope to be doing 10 years from now?

In 10 years I hope to be a physical therapist or a nurse practitioner. Aside from work, I want to be coaching my kids in all their sports and coaching wrestling as well.

Favorite food from Central Market

My favorite food from the Central Market are the wraps on Friday nights. The line is almost always long but it’s so worth it, especially after a long week of classes.

Bucket list

Although I’m deathly afraid of heights I’ve always wanted to skydive. I also really want to pet a shark someday!
