Slaymaker leads Dutch to first win of the season

PELLA — Central College had three student-athletes secure American Rivers Conference Performers of the Week accolades following strong weekend performances.

Men's triple jumper Kale Purcell (fifth year, Holton, Kan.), baseball catcher Dom DeLaPaz (fifth year, Davenport, West HS) and men's tennis player Alex Slaymaker (junior, Geneseo, Ill.) were all cited by the league office.

Purcell was named the Field Events MVP at the American Rivers Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships Saturday in Decorah. He won the triple jump with a meet record measurement of 49 feet, 0.75 inches. He also took third in the long jump in 22-8.5.

DeLaPaz was 7-for-14 at the plate over four games against Milwaukee School of Engineering (Wis.) and Westminster College (Mo.). He hit career home run No. 26, taking over as the school's all-time leader. He drove in four runs and scored three as Central went 2-2.

Slaymaker was 2-0 in Sunday's dual against Cornell College, helping the Dutch to their first win of the season by a 5-2 score. He won his No. 2 singles match 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (10-5) and the No. 1 doubles match 6-3.
