MOUNT VERNON — Playing for the first time in 2026, the Central College men's tennis team competed at the Cornell Invitational Sunday.
Playing against Cornell College, Loras College and the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, the Dutch went 8-4 in doubles and 10-14 in singles.
Francisco Molina Centeno (sophomore, Mexico City, Mexico / Centro Educativo Jean Piaget) won both of his Flight B singles matches against Jacob Stinski (Wis.-Stevens Point) 6-2, 6-7 (6-8), 12-10 and Joao Oliveira (Loras) 5-7, 7-5, 10-5.
Alex Slaymaker (senior, Geneseo, Ill.) secured a 6-2, 5-7, 10-8 victory in A Flight singles over Hayden Martin (Loras). Slaymaker and
Seth VandenBerg (freshman, Mason City, North Iowa Christian HS) won twice in Flight B doubles. Beating Jacob Stinski and Ben Temple (Wis.-Stevens Point) 6-4 and Abhi Nagar and Sam Canas (Loras) 6-2
In the A Flight of doubles,
Ernest Alvarez Chedzoy (senior, Kerrville, Texas, Tivy HS) and
Gavin Jablonski bested Hayden Martin and Jaimes Palmer of Loras 7-5.
Central hosts a seven-team tournament on Saturday in Pella starting at 10 a.m. from the Pella High School tennis courts and Central's A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex.
