WATERLOO — Placing nine entries into the semifinals, the Central College men's tennis team had a banner weekend at the American Rivers Conference Championships.
Spread across five singles brackets and three doubles brackets, Central had a busy day of semifinal action Saturday.
Donovan Klish (junior, Liberty, Mo., North HS) finished as the D-Flight Champion and
Aaron Meinders (sophomore, Pella, Pella Christian HS) topped the E-Flight. Klish was unseeded entering the weekend and won five matches. He won his semifinal and the final in a tiebreaker.
Freshmen
Joseph Wright (freshman, Sergeant Bluff, Sergeant Bluff-Luton HS) and Seth VandenBerg (freshman, Mason City, North Iowa Christian HS) finished second and third, respectively in the C Flight.
In the A-Flight of singles,
Ernest Alvarez Chedzoy (senior, Kerrville, Texas, Tivy HS) upset the No. 4 seed Luke Doig of Coe College in a wild 4-5 (5-7), 4-1, 17-15 decision as one of his two wins.
David Gonzalez (freshman, Tucson, Arz., Sabino HS) and Noah Johnson (freshman, Nevada) finished fourth in the B Flight and E Flight, respectively.
Connery Varsa (freshman, Nevada) and
Hayden Sinclair (senior, Ames) made it a hat trick with a C Flight doubles crown. Varsa and Sinclair defeated
Francisco Molina Centeno (freshman, Mexico City, Centro Educativo Jean Piaget) and Gonzalez in all-Central final.
Brody Ferrell (junior, Pella) and Meinders took third.
