Steffen and Schipper represent Central with weekly conference honors

Two Dutch athletes named the best in the league for last week's efforts

PELLA—Cetral College student-athletes Owen Schipper (sophomore, forward, Waukee HS) and Peyton Steffen (senior, Marion) capped off their uber-impressive weekly performances by earning American Rivers Conference Player of the Week honors in their respective sports.

The Dutch men's basketball team had a successful week with two thrilling overtime wins against Coe College and Buena Vista University. In this span, Schipper was dominant, recording a double-double in both games while averaging a monstrous 22 points, 14 rebounds, and 3 assists per game. Against Coe, Schipper played a taxing 43 minutes and put up 18 points while shooting 50% (4-8) from the field and 43% (3-7) from beyond the arc. To go along with his 18 points, he recorded a team-high 14 rebounds and recorded one of Central's four team blocks. While one would think playing 43 minutes would take a toll on someone's performance, Schipper instead followed this game up by playing 47 minutes against Buena Vista in a game in which he recorded 26 points, 14 rebounds, and four assists!

Both Schipper and the men's basketball team are starting to find their grove, as they have now won three games in a row with a home showdown against Nebraska Wesleyan University on the horizon. The matchup will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Steffen traveled to Ames on Friday to compete in the Cyclone Open at Iowa State University, where she competed in both the women's mile and the women's 1,000 meters (1K). In the women's mile, Steffen finished runner-up with a time of 4 minutes, 55.68 seconds. With this time, Steffen is now up to No. 4 in the national rankings. While this alone is extremely impressive, it wasn't all she had in store for her return to action. In the women's 1,000 meters, Steffen set a new school record, breaking her own, with a time of 2:56.58. This was good enough for a seventh-place finish in the race.

Central's indoor track and field season continues Friday, hosting the Dutch Winter Multi Meet starting at 1 p.m. There is also the Grinnell Invitational on Saturday, where much of the Dutch roster will compete. The action starts at 10 a.m.
