CEDAR RAPIDS— The Central College men's tennis team was eliminated from the American Rivers Conference tournament with a 4-0 loss at No. 2 seeded Coe College Thursday.
Coe will move on and play Luther College the No. 1 seed in the championship on Saturday.
Coe (18-10, 7-1 American Rivers) won the doubles point winning 6-2 at Nos. 1 and 3.
In the singles matches the Kohawks won at Nos. 4, 5 and 6 to clinch the match. Despite not finishing their matches the top of Central's lineup was battling.
Ayden Fletcher (senior, Waukee) was tied 5-5 in his first set at No. 1. At No. 2
Jack Briggs (freshman, Pella) lost the opening set but had a 4-2 lead in the second set.
AJ Wilkins (senior, Grinnell) also battled despite losing the first set 6-4, he was down 2-1 in the second set.
"Coe was ready for us and came out of the blocks really fast," said coach
Ryun Ferrell. "We were able to slow them down a little bit in singles. We played hard and well, but they are a deep team."
This loss ends the season for the Dutch in which they went 12-13 overall and 6-2 in conference matches. The Dutch will return the majority of their lineup in 2025-26 but will see Fletcher and Wilkins depart.
"Overall, it was a great season, and we are glad to see our seniors go," Ferrell said "We have a lot of talent on this team, and it will be nice to see who can step up and replace what we are losing."
