Central falls in men’s tennis semifinals

The Dutch return the majority of their roster

CEDAR RAPIDS— The Central College men's tennis team was eliminated from the American Rivers Conference tournament with a 4-0 loss at No. 2 seeded Coe College Thursday.
           
Coe will move on and play Luther College the No. 1 seed in the championship on Saturday.
           
Coe (18-10, 7-1 American Rivers) won the doubles point winning 6-2 at Nos. 1 and 3.
           
In the singles matches the Kohawks won at Nos. 4, 5 and 6 to clinch the match. Despite not finishing their matches the top of Central's lineup was battling.
           
Ayden Fletcher (senior, Waukee) was tied 5-5 in his first set at No. 1. At No. 2 Jack Briggs (freshman, Pella) lost the opening set but had a 4-2 lead in the second set. AJ Wilkins (senior, Grinnell) also battled despite losing the first set 6-4, he was down 2-1 in the second set.
           
"Coe was ready for us and came out of the blocks really fast," said coach Ryun Ferrell. "We were able to slow them down a little bit in singles. We played hard and well, but they are a deep team."
           
This loss ends the season for the Dutch in which they went 12-13 overall and 6-2 in conference matches. The Dutch will return the majority of their lineup in 2025-26 but will see Fletcher and Wilkins depart.
           
"Overall, it was a great season, and we are glad to see our seniors go," Ferrell said  "We have a lot of talent on this team, and it will be nice to see who can step up and replace what we are losing."
