PELLA— Three Central College athletes received weekly honors from the American Rivers Conference.
AJ Wilkins (senior, Grinnell) was named the men's tennis player of the week,
Gunner Meyer (junor, Fairbank, Wapsie Valley HS) was cited in men's track and
Peyton Steffen (junior, Marion).
Wilkins was 3-0 in singles as well as doubles as the Dutch men's tennis team swept three road matches, defeating Buena Vista 7-0 at Storm Lake Tuesday, then downed the University of Dubuque 6-1 at Cedar Rapids and Loras College 5-2 at Dubuque, both on Friday.
Wilkins won twice at No. 3 singles and once in straight sets at No. 2 while he teamed with
Ayden Fletcher (senior, Waukee) for three victories at No. 1 doubles.
The Dutch improved to 6-2 in conference play to finish third. They'll play host to Loras Tuesday at 4 p.m. in a first-round match in the six-team conference tournament.
Meyer raced at the Drake Relays, posting a season-best time of 14.21 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles, finishing 15th. That moved him to eighth in the NCAA Division III this spring. Saturday he anchored Central's school record-breaking shuttle hurdle relay team that placed fourth in 58.18 seconds, finishing ahead of three Division I opponents.
Running in the highly competitive open division of the 5,000 meters Thursday, Steffen finished 10th in 16:42.09, moving up to 10th in Division III this season. It also places her third on Central's all-time best in the event.
It's the third time Steffen has received the league award this season. She was also cited March 31 and April 14.
The Dutch men's and women's squads compete in a triangular at Waverly Friday.
