Central men’s tennis team wraps up its Florida trip splitting its final matches

The Dutch beat Wittenberg

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
ORLANDO, FLA.— The Central College men's tennis team snapped its three-match losing streak with a 5-2 win against Wittenberg University.

The Dutch also fell in a tough 5-2 battle against Transylvania University in their second match of the day, and final match in Florida.

Against Wittenberg, the Dutch started quick sweeping the doubles matches. Ayden Fletcher (senior, Waukee) and AJ Wilkins (senior, Grinnell) battled for a 7-6 (7-4) win in a tiebreak at No. 1 doubles. The freshmen duo of Benny Ramker (Waverly, Waverly-Shell Rock HS) and Jack Briggs (Pella) won 6-2 at No. 2 doubles Travis Subbert (sophomore, McKinney, Texas, North HS) and Ernest Alvarez Chedzoy (sophomore, Kerrville, Texas, Tivy HS) picked up a 6-3 win at No. 3 doubles.

"It was nice to sweep the doubles matches," said Ferrell. "No. 1 doubles came from behind to get the win, and the freshmen are finding their way at No. 2 doubles, which is different then they have been playing."

In the singles matches Fletcher played two close sets but lost both of them and Wilkins split the first two sets before falling 10-6 in a tiebreak. Jack Briggs continues his strong play with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles and Chedzoy won the first set of his match 6-3, before losing the secondset 6-1, but he battled for a 10-8 win in the tiebreak to earn the win. Subbert won at No. 5, 6-3, 6-1 and Ramker took care of business at No. 6 singles winning 6-1, 6-2.

Transylvania was able to get the doubles point winning at Nos. 1 and 3 but the freshman duo stayed undefeated on the day winning 6-2 at No. 2 doubles.

"Briggs didn't loose a single match this week and Ramker continues to grow and adapt to the college game," Ferrell said. "The future is looking bight and it is impressive how these two are playing."

In the singles matches Briggs and Ramker once again were winners. Briggs won 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3 singles and Ramker won a tough three set match 6-4, 5-7, 10-7.

"This had a conference match feeling to it," Ferrell said. "Every match was tight, and it was a neat atmosphere. It was intense and everyone played hard."

The Dutch will return to Iowa and play three matches on March 22. One team will travel to William Jewell University and a second team will host Wartburg, in a nonconference match, and Illinois College. The times are still to be determined.

"The purpose of a trip like this is to get ready for the league matches, because every match will be tough, but we got better on this trip," said Ferrell.
