PELLA— It was a busy week in the sports world at Central College, which sees four different athletes win American Rivers Conference player of the week honors.
Dutch running back
Cody Klein (sophomore, Newton) dominated in the run game in Central's football game against Buena Vista University Saturday. Klein carried the ball ten times for 212 yards and three touchdowns, with an imposing 21.2 yards per carry. The three touchdowns went for 47, 29, and 26 yards each, with Klein's longest run of the day being 56 yards. The monstrous performance helped catapult Central to a 52-27 victory, while also earning Klein football offensive player of the week. Central's football team now improves to 7-1 on the year and travels to Indianola to face off against Simpson on Saturday, November 8.
Central 's men's soccer team played two games last week—the regular season finale on Tuesday against Loras College followed by round one of the conference tournament on Saturday against Nebraska Wesleyan University. In these games, Central goalkeeper
Morgan Finkenbinder (sophomore, Elkhorn, Neb., Skutt Catholic) allowed a combined zero goals on six saves. His two shutout performances were enough to win him men's soccer defensive player of the week, while also playing a huge part in Central's round one win over Wartburg. They now travel to Decorah to play Luther College in round two of the A-R-C tournament on Wednesday, November 5.
It was a highly successful week for the Central women's soccer team as well, who had players awarded for both women's defensive and offensive players of the week! Goalie
Zoey Sizemore (junior, Omaha, Neb., Mercy HS won defensive player of the week for the second time in three weeks, making it the third time she has received the award this season. In two games, Sizemore tallied an impressive 11 saves while only allowing two goals. On the other side of the ball,
Rylee Rustad (junior, Gilbert, Ariz., Casteel HS) was awarded offensive player of the week after a monster performance in the Dutch's biggest game of the season so far—round one of the A-R-C tournament against Wartburg College. In this game, Central won 3-2 and Rustad scored two of the goals while assisting on the other. She got the scoring started with a goal assisted by
Kylie Bloomstrom (sophomore, Forest Lake, Minn., Forest Lake Area HS) at the 70:13 mark, then followed it up with another goal (this one unassisted) at the 77:42 mark. This wasn't it for Rustad, though, as she eventually assisted the game winning goal, which was scored by
Grace Wolford (senior, West Des Moines, Iowa., Valley HS). The Dutch move on to round two, where they will play on the road against the University of Dubuque on Wednesday, November 5.
