PELLA— It goes without saying that it was a successful week in the sports world for Central College, as three individuals have been named the American Rivers Conference player of the week in their respective sports.
This is the highest number Central has had in a week so far this year, and it is represented by individuals from
the football, women's cross country, and women's soccer teams.
It took no time for
Avion Bailey (freshman, El Mirage, Ariz.) to make an impact on the Dutch football game against Nebraska Wesleyan University Saturday, as he took the game's opening kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown. The touchdown was his only touch all game. However, the freshman made the most of his one touch, as his first career touchdown got things going for Central, who ended up winning 34-13. On top of this, Bailey has been awarded both A-R-C Male Athlete of the Week and Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance.
Maddy Stevens (freshman, Grimes, Dallas Center-Grimes HS) is becoming more and more familiar with A-R-C Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week. She was awarded it yet again, making it her fourth time in only five meets after finishing second overall individually out of 220 runners at the Bradley Pink Classic with a time of 21 minutes, 55.47 seconds on the 6,000-meter course. Stevens was one of only two runners at the meet to finish with a sub-22 minute time and will look to continue her strong freshman season at the A-R-C Championships on November 1.
Goalie
Zoey Sizemore (junior, Omaha, Neb., Mercy Catholic High School) impressed over the course of two games for the Dutch women's soccer team last week, shutting out both Luther College and Nebraska Wesleyan. On Tuesday, Central played Luther where Sizemore had three saves on three shots on goal. These saves proved to be crucial, as the game ended in a 0-0 tie. Central then traveled to Lincoln on Saturday to play Nebraska Wesleyan, where Sizemore built on her strong week with another three save game in a 2-0 win. Because of these performances, Sizemore was awarded the A-R-C Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week, making it the second time she has received the honor this season.
