MOUNT VERNON— The Central College men's tennis team started their fall season by participating in the Cornell Invitational.

The Dutch were able to bring 21 people to play in the invitational where they played against athletes from Loras College, Cornell College and the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point. There were six flights of singles and doubles matches. The squad went 10-14 in singles matches and 4-8 in doubles matches.

"Overall, it was a very solid day for the first competition of the season," coach Ryun Ferrell said. "We played hard and looked physically fit, but we will continue to improve as we play more matches.

The team got wins from Nick Scott (5th-year, Fort Benton, Mont., Great Falls Central Catholic) 6-4, 6-1 and Ayden Fletcher (senior, Waukee) 7-5, 6-3 in the A-flight of singles. Jack Briggs (freshman, Pella) won his B-flight match 6-0, 6-1 and Travis Subbert (sophomore, McKinney, Texas, North) also added a 7-5, 7-6 win in the same flight.

In the C-flight of singles Cashen Thompson (sophomore, Pella) got a win 6-3, 6-3, as well as Gavin Jablonski (sophomore, Marshalltown) 6-0, 6-1both of which were against players from Cornell.

"(Thompson) works really hard in practice and it was good to see him get a win today," said Ferrell.

Alex Slaymaker (sophomore, Geneseo, Ill.) joined Fletcher to get a doubles match win in the A-flight when they took down a duo from UW-Stevens Point 6-3.

"I have had a lot of fun with this group today and at practice," Ferrell said. "They compete hard against each other, and it makes everyone better."

The next competition for the team is the American Rivers Conference Individual Championships in Cedar Rapids Saturday and Sunday.
