NICHOLASVILLE, KY.—
Harold Dobernecker (senior, Nevada) bolted to a strong start but darkness and a demanding PGA Tour course combined to muddy the opening-day results for the Central College men's golf team at the Garn Championship Monday.
Teams were attempting to play 36 holes at the par-72 Champions Trace Golf Course, which is also the site of the PGA Tour's Barbasol Championship, but darkness fell with the Dutch still needing to play two holes. Results were incomplete but Central was tied for 12th in a 23-team field, 24 shots back of early leader Cumberland (Ky.).
Dobernecker opened with a 74 and was just one shot out of the individual 18-hole lead. But the rest of the squad had difficulty mastering the dry fairways and slick greens, finishing at 326 overall.
John Oltman (senior, Pella) shot 81,
Kayden Pendergrass (junior, Mount Vernon) had 83 and
Jacob Moffett (senior, Mount Pleasant) and
Cole McGriff (senior, Grinnell) each shot 88.
Blake Wynn (sophomore, Milan, Ill., Sherrard HS), playing as an individual entrant, shot 76.
The Dutch were steadier through the first 16 holes of the second round. Dobernecker, Pendergrass and Oltman were 5-over-par. Moffett is 7-over.
"If we can par the last two holes, our score should probably be pretty good," coach
Mel Blasi said.
Dobernecker shined despite the challenges.
"Harold played just brilliantly today," Blasi said. "He struck it well, he putted it well."
The conclusion of the second round and the final 18-hole round start Tuesday at 8 a.m. (Eastern Daylight Time).
