WEST DES MOINES — Led by another stellar under par round by
Carter Yurgae (sophomore, West Des Moines, Dowling Catholic HS), the Central College men's golf team is in second place after the first round of the American Rivers Championships Sunday.
Yurgae carded a 69 on the par-71 course at Glen Oaks Country Club. He's also in second place in the individual standings, two stroke backs of the leader. Central's team score of 296 is nine back of the University of Dubuque.
Joining Yurgae at the top of the leaderboard,
Maison Brandt (sophomore, Byron, Ill.) shot a 71 and is in fourth place.
"We played really well today," coach
Mel Blasi said. "We jumped out to a fast start with Carter 3-under par and Mason 2-under par on the front nine. Carter had it 5-under through 14 holes before making three late bogeys. He and Mason were both fantastic all day."
Blake Wynn (senior, Milan, Ill., Sherrard HS) and
Lincoln Eighmy (junior, Carlisle) both contributed to the team score. Wynn shot a 77 and is in 19th while Eighmy shot a 79 and is in 27th.
Crew Klingner (sophomore, Williamsburg) was the fifth player, shooting an 82.
Tee times for Monday's second round starts at 9 a.m.
"If we can put four good rounds together tomorrow, we can stay near the top," Blasi said. "It's a three-round tournament and if we can stay close anything is possible on the last day."
