PELLA—Adding to a winter full of accolades, Central College student-athletes
Joshua Van Gorp (senior, Pella, Pella Christian) and
Megan Johnson (senior, Parkersburg, Aplington-Parkersburg HS) were named the American Rivers Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week and the Women's Track and Field – Track Events Performer of the Week, respectively.
Van Gorp had his 11th double-double of the season in Saturday's 77-62 win against Luther by notching 14 points and 12 rebounds. He also had his 11th game of scoring 25 or more points this year with a 30-point performance in an 84-69 loss at Nebraska Wesleyan University Wednesday.
The senior center has been the league's player of the week three times in the last four weeks and six times total in his career.
Central's men's basketball team opens the league's postseason tournament with a Tuesday night quarterfinal at 7:30 p.m. against the University of Dubuque.
Johnson was victorious in both races she entered over the weekend. She anchored the winning distance medley relay team at the Eagle Indoor Open hosted by the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse Friday night in a time of 11 minutes, 46.01 seconds. That unit has the second-best qualifying mark for the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships. She also won the mile at Wartburg College's Liz Wuertz Invitational Saturday in a time of 4:55.39. That effort has her No. 6 on the national qualifying list.
The American Rivers Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships are set for Friday and Saturday on the campus of the University of Dubuque.
