KANSASVILLE, WIS.— The second-round charge the Central College women's golf team needed never materialized at the Midwest Region Classic Saturday.
The Dutch slid from ninth to a tie for 11th with Lake Forest College (Ill.) in the 33-team field at 327-330--657. The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater rallied to take the crown with 318-305—623 while Adrian College (Mich.) shot 317-311--628 and American Rivers rival the University of Dubuque climbed to third at 323-314—637.
Mackenzie Biggs (senior, Bloomington, Ill., Normal HS), who shared the first-round individual lead with 74, turned in a season-worst 82 Saturday and finished in a tie for ninth at 156 in the massive 194-player field at the par-72 Brighton Dale Links.
"She was playing well and kind of lost it in the middle of the round," coach
Tabitha Schumacher said. "You could tell she was getting a little tired. When you have a 10-hour turnaround it gets pretty tough. But I think the other way to look at it is, ok, we got the bad round out of our system before conference and I have all the confidence in the world that we can come ready and prepared."
Peyton Bytnar (senior, Bettendorf) posted Central's best round of the day and shot 78-80—158.
Lydia Grond (junior, Hull, Boyden-Hull HS) had 85-85—170,
Avery Woods (senior, Long Grove, North Scott HS) shot 90-83—173 and
Rachel Sohn (senior, Sutherland, South O'Brien HS) 90-90—180.
"Peyton played decent and Avery played pretty well, but we were missing the other scores to with them," coach
Tabitha Schumacher said. "It was like we had to do at nationals last year, playing (the late wave Friday and the early wave Saturday) is pretty tough."
Playing as at-large entrants,
Parker Stout (junior, Lowden, North Cedar HS) shot 84-81--165 and
Jaden Smith (sophomore, Marengo, Iowa Valley HS) had 94-98--192.
Central, which played in Saturday's early wave, had to wait until Saturday evening for the final team results.
"This was a long weekend but we know we've got two weeks to put in a lot of work," Schumacher said. "We feel like everyone has a list of things that they need to work on, so it's kind of put it in the rear-view mirror, try to gain some confidence and see what happens."
Central is off until defending its title at the American Rivers tournament Oct. 7-9 at the Ames Country Club. Dubuque will be the tourney favorite, Schumacher said.
"We tied them one time this season and they've gotten us every other round so they're playing well," Schumacher said. "But we just have to put together good scores three rounds in a row."
Two starters return from the squad that posted a 42-shot runaway win at the Ames Country Club a year ago.
"It's a course that fits our players' games well and we also played well there two years ago so there are some good takeaways," Schumacher said.
