Box Score PELLA — The Central College men's tennis team completed its turn in hosting the American Rivers Conference Individual Championships Saturday with the singles brackets.
Central entered 18 players from its roster into the five singles brackets.
Hayden Sinclair (freshman, Ames) advanced the furthest of any Dutch players, reaching the semifinals in the E-Flight. He defeated Daniel Vargas of Buena Vista University 4-0, 4-0 and then beat Colton Abels of Wartburg College 4-0, 2-4 (10-5) in the quarterfinals.
"He did a good job," coach
Ryun Ferrell said. "He lost in a tight match but played well, played hard. He's figuring some things out as a freshman. We've seen flashes of brilliance. We just need to turn that into a steady stream."
Two other Dutch players made quarterfinals in their bracket.
Victor Nop (junior Huxley, Ballard HS) advanced there in the D-Flight and
Brady Corn (freshman, Great Falls, Mont., C.M. Russell HS) made it in the E-Flight.
"Victor was playing some really good tennis," Ferrell said. "When he's on, he's really tough to beat. The doubles court makes Sense to Brady but the singles court is a little tougher for him. The singles game is easier to figure out and I think he can really improve over the next few weeks."
Central lost both of its matches in the A-Flight of singles.
Nick Scott (senior, Fort Benton, Mont., Great Falls Central Catholic HS) lost 4-1, 4-2 to Eli Young of Luther College and Louk Rijsdijk beat
Ayden Fletcher (junior, Waukee) 4-2, 4-0.
"I was pleased with the weekend," Ferrell said. "It was great to see what our team can do."
A few select players are headed to the ITA Division III Midwest Regional at St. Peter, Minnesota next weekend. The rest of the team will host St. Mary (Kan.) at 2 p.m. Saturday.
