PELLA — For the fourth year in a row, the Central College men's tennis team had the winning pairing of the B-Flight doubles at the American Rivers Conference Individual Championships Friday.
Rain in Pella rearranged the tournament to focus on the three doubles brackets Friday and moved most of singles play to Saturday.
In the A-Flight of doubles,
Nick Scott (senior, Fort Benton, Mont., Great Falls Central Catholic HS) and
Travis Subbert (freshman, McKinney, Texas, North HS) won twice to advance to the quarterfinals. They opened with a 6-2 win over Issac Hinze and Jackson Zenner of Coe College and followed up with a 7-6 (7-5) win over Felipe Biscaro and Tiago de Felicio from Luther College. They fell 7-6 (7-3) in the quarterfinals to the No. 4 seed Luke Doig and Graham Peterson of Coe College.
"You would think they've been playing together for years," coach
Ryun Ferrell said. "They bring an amazing energy, attitude and effort. It was great to see already.
AJ Wilkins (junior, Grinnell) and
Ernest Alvarez Chedzoy (freshman, Kerrville, Texas, Kivy HS) continued Central's streak of winning the B-Flight doubles with a 4-0 day, ending with a 6-3 win over Rhys Biro-Moore and Gennaro Dimuro over Luther College.
"They were like woodpeckers in petrified forest, they got to work and we're looking for some opportunities," coach
Ryun Ferrell said. "They embraced their opportunities and did a great job. It's amazing to see from a team we put together not that long ago.
Ayden Fletcher (junior, Waukee) and
Alex Slaymaker (freshman, Geneseo, Ill.) only loss came against Wilkins and Alvarez Chezoy, finishing in third place in the B-Flight.
Gavin Jablonski (freshman, Marshalltown) and Cashen Thompson (freshman, Pella) took second in the C-Flight of doubles, winning a pair of matches.
"We had 18 players in action today," Ferrell said. "We won some matches and lost some clothes ones. It was a just solid day overall."
The remainder of the singles matches will start at 9 a.m. in Pella.
