NORMAL, ILL.— The early season surge continued for
Mackenzie Biggs (senior, Bloomington, Ill., Normal HS) as she posted a 3-over-par 75 for the Central College women's golf team at Illinois Wesleyan Fall Classic Saturday.
But the Dutch are in a tie for 13th in a talented 19-team field for the 36-hole tourney with 316 on the par-72 Ironwood Golf Course. Washington-St. Louis (Mo.) shot an even-par 288 and leads host Illinois Wesleyan University by two shots and Denison University (Ohio) by six. American Rivers foe the University of Dubuque is seventh at 306.
Biggs, playing near her home in Bloomington, is tied for 17th individually and coming off a second-place finish at the Siouxland Fall Invitational Sept. 6-7.
"She played really solid the entire round," coach
Tabitha Schumacher said. "She's been striking the ball well and her short game has been really good."
Lydia Grond (junior, Hull, Boyden-Hull HS) shot 77 and is also off to a steady start.
"It's really nice to have two players in the lineup that have been pretty solid and consistent," Schumacher said.
Peyton Bytnar (senior, Bettendorf) had 81,
Avery Woods (senior, Long Grove, North Scott HS) had 83 and
Rachel Sohn (senior, Sutherland, South O'Brien HS) had 84.
"Ultimately, what kind of got us was some big numbers," Schumacher said. "We had to take two (quadruple bogeys) in our top four scores and having those is going to hurt."
At-large entrant
Jaden Smith (sophomore, Marengo, Iowa Valley HS) shot 85,
Parker Stout (junior, Lowden, North Cedar) had 86 and
Mickey Martens (freshman, Villa Park, Ill., Willowbrook HS) shot 88.
Playing conditions were ideal for scoring and Schumacher is impressed with the number of players in the field going low.
"The scores were really good," she said. "To look at the leaderboard and have six players under par, those are pretty good scores."
Teams tee off for Sunday's final round at 9 a.m.
