Box Score CEDAR RAPIDS — The Central College men's tennis team wrapped up its weekend at the American Rivers Conference Individual Championships Saturday with a pair of quarterfinalists in the C-Flight singles bracket.
Rain impacted the schedule much of the day Friday and forced a late night but all 12 Dutch players were able to get at least one singles and one doubles match in over the course of two days.
"It was a solid weekend overall for the Dutch," coach
Ryun Ferrell said.
Central advanced a pair of individuals to the C-Flight singles quarterfinals.
Carter Corn (freshman, Great Falls, Mont., C.M. Russell HS) and
Lucas Vroom (junior, Altoona, Southeast Polk HS) each won their first two matches of the weekend before bowing out Saturday afternoon. Vroom beat Ashley Stapley of Wartburg College 8-2 and Zachary Ambrose of Simpson College 8-1. Corn defeated Alexander Hardin of the University of Dubuque 8-2 and Declan Schuessler of Wartburg 8-2.
"Lucas played smart and tough," Ferrell said. "Carter showed me some good stuff this weekend. He's got some skills in singles, he just kind of ran out of gas after a late night Friday. They both represented us great."
Ferrell was still excited about Caleb Hammerlinck and
Nick Scott's B-Flight doubles tournament title from late Friday night.
"They started off a little slow at the beginning of the tournament," Ferrell said. "They started meshing and playing well and went on a run. They looked great."
A handful of Dutch men will play at the ITA Division III Midwest Regional next weekend in Saint Peter, Minnesota.
"We'll see what kind of damage we can do up there," Ferrell said.
