Central advances to women's golf tourney title match

Dutch top Wartburg 3-2, take on Grinnell Sunday

PELLA—Pulling out a 3-2 win over Wartburg College, the Central College women's golf team advanced to Sunday's championship match in the Battle at Bos at Pella's Bos Landen Golf Club.

Grinnell College was a 5-0 winner over Coe College in the match play tourney and will meet Central at noon Sunday for the title. Coe and Wartburg will square off for third place.

Central's Mackenzie Biggs (sophomore, Bloomington, Ill., Normal HS) delivered a pivotal 2 and 1 victory at the No. 1 position. Thea Lunning (junior, Mason City) coasted to a 6 and 4 win at No. 3 and Madison Clark (junior, Bloomington, Ill., Central Catholic HS) won 3 and 2 at No. 4.

Teams contested with stiff winds as well as the demanding par-72 Bos Landen layout.

"Overall, we handled the wind really well," said coach Tabitha Schumacher. "There were some good and close matches but we got the job done. We get to play Grinnell tomorrow and that'll be a really good test against one of the better teams in the region."

Competing in a match play format is an adjustment.

"I feel like our play was a little slower but it's because every single hole matters so much," Schumacher said. "It's definitely a different mindset and trying to refocus if you had a bad hole because it's only one hole. So you have to be able to come back from that and try to stay consistent."
