WHITEWATER, WIS. — Three Central College men's tennis doubles tandems got some matches in Saturday at the Midwest Open hosted in conjunction with the ITA Division III Midwest Regional Saturday.
A steady rain on Friday pushed most of the doubles matches to Saturday morning. Even further rain caused more delays and dragged the competition out to the point were all of Central's matches were played under no ad scoring.
"The doubles was quality," assistant coach
Trevor Budewitz said. "Most of the matches were tight. The difference in the tight matches was who won the big points. In the first rounds we were able to win all the important points. In the later rounds it got harder."
Brad DiLeo (senior, Iowa City, West HS) and
Ayden Fletcher (freshman, Waukee) grabbed two wins before bowing out. They opened with an 8-6 win over Antonio Coelho and Caue Ribeiro of Bethany Lutheran College (Minn.) and then were 8-0 winners against Alex Daignault and Reece Patten of the College of St. Scholastica (Minn.). They lost 8-2 to Geoffery Youngs and Justin Sehlin of Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.)
Tanner Finken (senior, Carroll) and
Caleb Hamerlinck (junior, Huxley, Ballard HS) won 8-5 in their first match against Duke Nguyen and Jace Westerbur of St. Scholastica and then lost 8-6 to Jakub Belik and Ben Anderson of St. Olaf College (Minn.).
Matthew Den Adel (junior, Ankeny, Centennial HS) and Jacob Alden (senior, Ames, Ballard HS) won 8-6 in their opener against Hamline University's Surprise Taylor and Sean Le. They lost to William Stepanski and Sho Tanaka of Carleton College (Minn.)
Central is done for the fall season and returns to competition on January 29 at Bethel University.
