Dutch men into conference tennis semifinals

Box Score CEDAR RAPIDS— With a 5-0 shellacking of Nebraska Wesleyan University Friday afternoon, the Central College men's tennis team advanced to the semifinals of the American Rivers Conference tournament.

The No. 3 seed entering the weekend, Central (12-8) completed the whitewashing of the No. 6 Prairie Wolves (4-13) having previously beat them on March 29 8-1.

"We took care of business really well," coach Ryun Ferrell said. "Once we got our bearings, we executed the plan."

After sweeping the doubles matches, the Dutch only two need singles victories to sweep the match. Ethan St. John (sophomore, Crystal Lake, Ill., Central HS) was the first one done at No. 5, winning 6-0, 6-2.

"He's just steady eddie," Ferrell said. "He's got a style and he goes at you that way. He's been the biggest surprise for us this year. We knew he was a good player, but he's been remarkable."

William Isiminger (sophomore, North Aurora, Ill., West Aurora HS) got the second win at No. 1, 6-0, 6-1.

"Will's been working really hard," Ferrell said. "He always plays well in the first set, his biggest issue has been maintaining that pace. This time, his opponent tried to make a push in the second set and he was not going to have it. I was happy to see him step up in that way."

Isiminger won 8-5 at No. 2 doubles with Brad DiLeo (freshman, Iowa City, West HS) and Josh Phillips (senior, Morton, Ill.) joined St. John for an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles. David Boschma (sophomore, Olathe, Kan., Northwest HS) and Danny Anderson (senior, Boone) won 8-2 at No. 1 doubles.

For the second Saturday in a row, Central will square off with Luther (16-6), the No. 2 seed, with a spot in the conference tournament championship game on the line. The Norse beat the Dutch 9-0 in Decorah last week.

"We're looking forward to it," Ferrell said. "I told the guys we have to have be ready. If we get up in game, we can't let them back in. It'll be nice to have another shot at them."
