Box Score STORM LAKE — A 3-0 cushion after the doubles matches launched the Central College men's tennis team to a 9-0 victory over Buena Vista University on Saturday.
It's the fourth-straight win in American Rivers Conference matches for Central (9-7, 5-1 conference). The loss moves the Beavers to 4-7 (0-4 conference) on the season.
At the top of the singles lineup,
Josh Phillips (senior, Morton, Ill.) topped John Foss 6-4, 7-5 in his debut at No. 1 singles. Phillips (6-6) had played his first 11 matches at No. 3.
"He lost to that kid last year and beat him in straight sets this year," coach
Ryun Ferrell said. "I was a really good win for him."
Phillips and
Ethan St. John (sophomore, Crystal Lake, Ill., Central HS) continued their successful run at No. 3 doubles, winning 8-4. The duo has gone 8-2 on the season.
"They're tough," Ferrell said. "They've got good chemistry and do a lot of things well when they play together. I see even better things coming for them in the future."
St. John also won 6-1, 7-5 at No. 3 singles.
Kris Weeden (senior, Des Moines, Dowling Catholic HS) won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. While
Tanner Finken (freshman, Carroll, Kuemper Catholic HS),
Jackson Lewton (senior, Ankeny, Cetennial HS), and
Ben Turnley (junior, Manhattan, Kan.) picked up wins in spots No. 4, 5, and 6, respectively.
"We gave some rest to some guy who needed it," Ferrell said. "We're blessed to have deep team and we gave some other guys an opportunity to step up."
In doubles,
David Boschma (sophomore, Olathe, Kan. Northwest HS) and
Danny Anderson (junior, Boone) won 8-3 at No. 1 and
William Isiminger (sophomore, North Aurora, Ill., West Aurora HS) and
Brad DiLeo (freshman, Iowa City, West HS) won 8-5 at No. 2.
The next varsity match for the Dutch will be on Tuesday, April 23 against Northwestern College, a first-year NAIA program from Orange City, Iowa. The Dutch host Iowa Central Community College for an exhibition match on April 17.
