ST. PETER, MINN.—Central College sophomore
William Isiminger (North Aurora, Ill., West Aurora HS) advanced one round before being sidelined in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Midwest Regional Championships Friday.
The tournament features more than 100 top players from 27 NCAA Division III colleges in Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin. Winners advance to the ITA National Small College Championships.
The Dutch sent Isiminger and sophomore
David Boschma (Olathe, Kan., Northwest HS) to compete in singles and sophomore
Ethan St. John (Crystal Lake, Ill, Central HS) along with Boschma in doubles.
Isiminger defeated Gabe Binversie of Concordia (Wis.) 6-2, 7-6 Friday morning.
"He did that without playing the best tennis I've seen him play," said assistant coach
Peter Greteman. "But when you're able to win a match when you're not at your best, that's a good sign. It shows how hard he pushes himself on every point for the entire match."
Isiminger was then defeated by American Rivers Conference rival Cole Schneider of Luther College, 6-2, 6-0.
"Cole is one of the best players in the conference," Greteman said. "But it's good for William to see him this early so he knows what he needs to work on to get better results in the future."
Boschma tumbled in the opening round to Elliot Schneider of St. Scholastica (Minn.), 6-4, 6-1.
"That was a tough match for the first round," Greteman said.
Boschma and St. John also were sidelined in the opening round of doubles, losing to a duo from Carroll (Wis.), 8-3.
"They're young it's their first year together," Greteman. "You could tell they're sophomores and don't have a lot of match experience. It will be really exciting to see what they can do this year."
In Central's only action Saturday, Boschma and St. John will compete in the consolation bracket.
