WATERLOO — A pair of doubles teams for the Central College men's tennis squad bagged multiple wins at the American Rivers Conference Individual Championships Friday.
Saturday's B-Flight doubles semifinal matches will each have a Central duo competing. The No. 5 seed on the bracket,
David Boschma (Olathe, Kan., Northwest HS) and
Ethan St. John (Crystal Lake, Ill., Central HS) strung together three wins including an 8-6 win over the No. 5 seed from the University of Dubuque in the quarterfinals.
"Ethan and David have been together since last year," Ferrell said. "We've been grooming them to be team that's in the mix all the time this year."
The No. 2 seed of
William Isiminger (sophomore, North Aurora, Ill., West Aurora HS) and
Brad DiLeo (freshman, Iowa City, West HS) won both matches 8-3, capping their day with a win over the No. 7 seed from Simpson College in the quarterfinals.
"For a team we just put together, those two looked pretty solid," Ferrell said. "They're doing some good things and it's neat to watch them play."
In singles action, Boschma and
Kris Weeden (junior, Des Moines, Dowling Catholic HS) advanced the furthest of any Central player, losing in the quarterfinal round of the B-Flight singles.
"They both looked great," Ferrell said. "Kris kind of ran out of steam by the end of the day. David and the player from Coe really pushed each other to another level."
The Flight-B doubles semifinals will start at 9 a.m. on Sunday.
"Friday of this tournament is a long day," Ferrell said. "Hopefully, they can overcome their tiredness and play well tomorrow."
