LINCOLN, NEBRASKA—Another 9-0 victory in Iowa Conference play at Nebraska Wesleyan University gave the Central College men's tennis team enough wins to seal in spot in the league tournament at the end of the regular season.
The Dutch (11-9, 3-1 IIAC) dropped a 8-1 decision in the second contest of the day Doane University in Crete, Nebraska.
"Now that we've officially qualified for the tournament, we just need to pick off as many teams as we can and get the highest possible seed," coach
Ryun Ferrell said.
After blanking Simpson College on Thursday, a senior-laden lineup did the same thing to the Prairie Wolves (2-12, 0-3 IIAC). With four seniors in the singles lineup and five in the doubles lineup, Ferrell sees this team as a bit of rarity.
"It's the way you beat a team 9-0 that we're focused on," Ferrell said. "With an older group like we have, you've got to take care of business when you have the opportunity.
"To have this many seniors in the starting lineup is ridiculous. We're so fortunate to have them. They all put extra work in every week whether it's in the weight room or on the court."
The all senior doubles pairings of
C.J. Cliff (Decorah) and
Jacob Logan (Bettendorf) won 8-3 at No. 2 doubles while
Scott Wilson (Urbandale) and
Jimmy Cunningham (Cedar Rapids, Kennedy HS) won 8-4 at No. 3 doubles.
Garret Taylor (senior, Creston) and
William Isiminger (freshman, North Aurora, Ill., West Aurora HS) topped the other No. 1 team 8-1.
The first two players in the singles order, Taylor and Logan, were victorious 6-4, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-1, respectively.
Tom Palmer (senior, Pella) was a 7-5, 6-3 winner at No. 3 and Cliff won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5. Freshmen Isiminger and
David Boschma (Olathe, Kan., Northwest HS) had wins at No. 4 (6-0, 6-1) and No. 6 (6-4, 6-2).
Cliff and Logan scored the only point against Doane by taking No. 2 doubles 8-3.
It will be back-to-back weekends for the Dutch in Nebraska as they face a Division I program the University of Nebraska-Omaha on Sunday.
"It'll be a great experience for our guys to play a quality Division I opponent," Ferrell said.
