Dutch hand Simpson men’s tennis defeat

PELLA— Not only did the Central College men's tennis team sweep the match 9-0 against Simpson College, but they swept every set in the blowout victory on Thursday afternoon.

With the victory, the Dutch (10-8, 2-1 IIAC) have won 40 straight contests against the Storm (6-8, 0-2 IIAC) dating back to March of 1993

A well-balanced Central lineup made it difficult for coach Ryun Ferrell to pick just one player who stood out in Thursday's match.

"They all looked good," he said. "We came out a little sloppy doubles but we got settled and starting playing smart again. Simpson is probably one of the better teams we've played this year."

In those doubles matches, the No. 2 team of Jacob Logan (senior, Bettendorf) and CJ Cliff (senior, Decorah) won by the widest margin at 8-2. At No. 1 doubles, Garret Taylor (senior, Creston) and William Isiminger (freshman, North Aurora, Ill., West Aurora HS) won 8-3 and the No. 3 tandem of Scott Wilson (senior, Urbandale) and Jimmy Cunningham (senior, Cedar Rapids, Kennedy HS) won 8-5.

Only playing in the singles lineup, Tom Palmer (senior, Pella) won 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 3 slot. Freshman David Boschma (freshman, Olathe, Kan., Northwest HS) overcame some adversity for the 7-5, 6-0 triumph.

"David came out a little slow in the first set," Ferrell said. "He got his feet under him and settled in well."

Logan (No. 2), Isiminger (No. 4) and Cliff (No. 5) all had 6-0, 6-0 singles wins. Taylor's 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 1 singles completed the sweep.

A trip to Lincoln, Nebraska on Saturday is highlighted by a 9 a.m. Iowa Conference match against Nebraska Wesleyan University (2-10, 0-1 IIAC). The Dutch will also face Doane University (Neb.) at 1 p.m. in a non-conference tilt.

"We have a lot of players going and its another opportunity to get more of them involved in match play," Ferrell said. "It's not a short drive so it's nice to get an extra match in. Rather than sitting back and watching other guys play, we're finding ways to get more people involved."
