Central men trounce Wartburg on tennis court

WAVERLY — Recording the widest margin of victory over Wartburg College in four years, the Central College men's tennis team breezed past the Knights 7-2 Thursday night.

Central is now 14-10 on the season with a 6-1 mark in Iowa Conference matches. Wartburg fell to 11-12 overall and 4-4 in conference.

Depth continues to be a key component to Central's success as they won decisively at the back end of the singles lineup. Senior C.J. Cliff (Decorah) won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5 while freshmen William Isiminger (North Aurora, Ill., West Aurora HS) and David Boschma (Olathe, Kan., Northwest HS) won at No. 4 and No. 6 singles by 6-4, 6-0 and 6-2, 6-4, respectively.

"We're able to find a ton of players that we can develop," Ferrell said. "It's a longer process but it helps us to be tough at the bottom."

Jacob Logan (senior, Bettendorf) and Tom Palmer (senior, Pella) also had singles wins at No. 2 (6-3, 6-0) and No. 3 (6-2, 6-2), respectively.

Logan and Cliff lost a tough match against Loras in the No. 2 doubles slot. The pair was able to bounce back in a big way against the Knights with an 8-1 victory.

"They really showed some resiliency," Ferrell said. "They just wanted to thump somebody after last weekend."

Scott Wilson (senior, Urbandale)
and Jimmy Cunningham (senior, Cedar Rapids, Kennedy HS) scored an 8-6 triumph at No. 3 doubles.

The final regular season match of the season for the Dutch doubles as Senior Day when the team hosts Luther College Saturday at 9 a.m. The winner will secure the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament May 4-5.

"Our team will be in their element while Luther has to come to us," Ferrell said. "Luther will come in ready to go and we need to be equally prepared. They're going to try and put us in our place so we've got to come out swinging."
