DUBUQUE— It was two wins on one trip to Dubuque for the Central College men's tennis team after beating the University of Dubuque 8-1 and Loras College 6-3.
With two Iowa Conference matches remaining, the Dutch are 5-1 in league matches and 13-10 overall. The Spartans fell to 2-10 (0-4 conference) and the Duhawks dipped to 11-5 (3-3 conference).
In the opener against the Spartans, Central breezed through doubles with a 3-0 lead. The No. 1 team of
Garret Taylor (senior, Creston) and
William Isiminger (freshman, North Aurora, Ill., West Aurora HS) as well as the No. 3 unit of
Jimmy Cunningham (senior, Cedar Rapids, Kennedy HS) and
Scott Wilson (senior, Urbandale) went 2-0 by also picking up wins against the Duhawks.
"We looked pretty good the entire day in doubles," coach
Ryun Ferrell said. "We don't want to give our opponent any reason to be excited and we did that today."
One of three singles players to win in both matches for the Dutch, No. 5 Cliff was a 6-0, 6-0 victor against Dubuque and won 6-1, 6-2 against Loras.
"C.J. has been playing like a man on a mission," Ferrell said. "He's been great for us."
Jacob Logan (senior, Bettendorf) was unblemished in the No. 2 slot with 7-5, 7-2 (Dubuque) and 6-1, 6-2 (Loras) victories while
David Boschma (freshman, Olathe, Kan., Northwest HS) had 6-0, 6-1 (Dubuque) and 6-2, 3-0 (Loras) wins.
The final road contest of the regular season for Central is Thursday in Waverly at 3:30 p.m. against Wartburg College.
"There's no love lost between us and them." Ferrell said. "I'm sure it's going to be an all-out battle. It's what you expect when we play against Wartburg."
