AURORA, ILLINOIS —Coach
Ryun Ferrell used 12 different Central College men's tennis players to polish off Aurora University 9-0 on Thursday
With Central (7-7) on spring break, Ferrell was able to bring enough players to use six in singles and the other six in doubles. The Spartans were no match for the depth of the Dutch.
"It's one of those matches where Aurora's players are dangerous enough that if you take your foot off the gas it could get pretty difficult," Ferrell said. "Our guys did a good job of not doing that. They went after them and did not back down."
Usually the No. 3 doubles team, seniors
Jimmy Cunningham (Cedar Rapids, Kennedy HS) and
Scott Wilson (Urbandale) moved their season record to 6-2 with an 8-3 victory in the No. 1 slot.
"Those two played really well," Ferrell said. "They've shown we've got some depth in doubles this year."
Freshmen
David Boschma (Olathe, Kan., Northwest HS) and
Ethan St. John (Crystal Lake, Ill., Central HS) pitched an 8-0 shutout at No. 2 while
Jackson Lewton (junior, Ankeny, Centennial HS) and
Tom Palmer (senior, Pella) grabbed an 8-3 decision at No. 3
Ferrell cited
Josh Phillips (junior, Morton, Ill.) at No. 5 singles as a performance that stuck out to him. The junior won 6-4, 6-1.
"Josh played well," he said. "His opponent normally plays No. 2 but he's been a little injured so they put him down at No. 5. Once Josh settled down, he looked great."
Danny Anderson (sophomore, Boone) had a 6-0, 6-0 whitewashing at No. 6 singles while
C.J. Cliff (senior, Decorah) won his team-leading seventh match this spring at No. 4 (6-0, 6-1)
Garret Taylor (senior, Creston) paced the team with a 6-0, 6-2 triumph at No. 1 singles. Classmate
Jacob Logan (senior, Bettendorf) topped his opponent 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2 and
William Isiminger (freshman, North Aurora, Ill., West Aurora HS) posted a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 3.
In a rescheduled contest, Central will host Morningside College on Friday, March 24 at 4 p.m.
