PELLA— The Central College men's tennis squad earned a doubleheader sweep Saturday in Pella after a 9-0 win over Knox College (Ill.) and an 8-1 triumph over Concordia University (Neb.).
"We're trying to get as much information about our team as we can and we have a lot of talented players, who all want to play," said coach
Ryun Ferrell. "We're just trying to figure out what our best foot forward is going to be. We saw a lot of good things against Knox and saw some more good things against Concordia, who was a team we beat just 5-4 last year. It was nice to see us take care of business today."
Junior
Josh Phillips (Morton, Ill.) earned a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles against Knox.
"Josh is just a stud," said Ferrell. "He's a stud soccer player. The way he plays tennis is a lot like the way he plays soccer. He moves his feet really well and goes after the ball. He makes the match really physical and people realize it right away and not many people stay with him."
Freshman
William Isiminger (North Aurora, Ill., West Aurora HS) played No. 4 singles against Concordia and earned a 6-4, 6-0 victory. Isiminger teamed up with senior
Garret Taylor (Creston) in No. 1 doubles and won 8-0.
"Our guys are working really hard," said Ferrell. "They are in hitting extra all the time and it's a credit to the guys for the hard work they are putting in. I'm really proud of the effort our guys are putting forth."
The Dutch return to the court February 25 for a doubleheader against Purdue-Northwest University (Ind.) and Morningside College with the opening match beginning at 9 a.m. in H.S. Kuyper Fieldhouse.
"I told our guys after the match today that we're not playing our best tennis yet and that's good because we don't want to be," said Ferrell. "We are getting ready for the Iowa Conference season and we're looking to peak at the right time."
