CEDAR RAPIDS — It wasn't always pretty, but the Central College men's tennis team overcame a 3-0 deficit to defeat Loras College 5-3 in an Iowa Conference tournament quarterfinal Friday night.
It's the second win over the Duhawks (13-7) for the Dutch (10-14) this season. Central previously bested Loras 6-3 on April 22.
In their previous meeting just two weeks ago, Central took two of three doubles matches. The Dutch dug themselves a big hole 3-0 after a poor performance in doubles.
"We played very uninspired tennis in doubles, and I wasn't too happy," coach
Ryun Ferrell said. "After a few inspiring words, they got to work and did what they should have done in the beginning."
Throughout the entire six-man singles lineup, the Dutch made quick work of their Duhawk opponents. Three Central players rattled off straight-set victories, and two more were able to win to secure the team win.
"It was a nice turnaround," Ferrell said. "We would have likely swept the singles if we had needed all six. We were able to get our heads right and take care of business."
The straight set-victories came courtesy of juniors
Jacob Logan (Bettendorf),
C.J. Cliff (Decorah) and
Scott Wilson (Urbandale). Logan won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles while Cliff was victorious 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5. Wilson rounded it out with 6-0, 6-1 decision at No. 6
For the third time in as many years under Ferrell, the Dutch advance to the tournament semifinals where they will square off against No. 2 Luther College. The Norse dispatched the Dutch 9-0 on April 9.
"It's not going to be an easy talk at all tomorrow," Ferrell said. "We're going to get ourselves and see if we can pick a fight."
The match starts at 9 a.m. at Veterans Memorial Tennis Center in Cedar Rapids.
