PELLA — A difficult non-conference season paid off with a 7-2 win for the Central College men's tennis team over Nebraska Wesleyan University Friday night in the team's Iowa Conference opener.
Central moved its overall season record to 4-11 in addition to its 1-0 league record. The Dutch were able to overcome a slow start in the doubles portion of the match.
"We looked good but played a little tight," coach
Ryun Ferrell said. "Our success has not been as high because of our tough schedule. Following some inspirational words after doubles, they were ready to good and played like they are capable."
One half of the only doubles pairing to fall against the Prairie Wolves (1-9, 0-1 conference),
Tom Palmer (junior, Pella) put together a dominating 6-2, 6-1 decision over Gabriel Sellmer at No. 4 singles.
"He really struggled in doubles, but looked great in singles," Ferrell said. "He was really able to step it up."
At No. 5 singles
CJ Cliff (junior, Decorah) also had a decisive victory, winning 6-1, 6-3 over Matheus dos Santon.
"(dos Santon) was a very talented player," Ferrell said. "CJ stayed patient and really stuck to his game."
Cliff, who won 9-8 at No. 1 doubles with
Jimmy Cunningham (junior, Cedar Rapids, Kennedy HS), was one of two players with singles and doubles wins for the Dutch.
Scott Wilson (junior, Urbandale) was the other to sweep both matches, winning 6-2, 6-4 at No. 6 singles and 8-6 at No. 2 doubles with
Garret Taylor (junior, Creston).
The Dutch are in Cedar Rapids Saturday to take on Coe College at noon.
