Four matches in one day for Central men’s tennis team

WHITE BEAR LAKE, MINN. — All 14 members of the Central College men's tennis team got game action in Minnesota Saturday as the team picked up its second of the win year.Details

In White Bear Lake, Central knocked off Northwestern-St. Paul (Minn.) 5-4 and fell to Hamline University (Minn.) 7-2.

Across the state in St. Peter, Central was blanked 9-0 by Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) after losing to Augustana (S.D.) by an 8-1 margin.

To make this arrangement possible, Central split its roster in two and sent half to Gustavus Adolphus College and the others to the Lifetime Fitness Center in Anytime Fitness.

Coach Ferrell said the experience, though taxing, is crucial to the progress of a young team early in the season.

"We played 14 different people in varsity matches," coach Ryun Ferrell said. "I really like doing the split squads and I can't wait to do it again.

The only 2-0 tandem in doubles on Saturday was the No. 3 doubles in White Bear Lake.  Kris Weeden (freshman , West Des Moines/.Dowling Catholic HS) and Josh Phillips hit 8-1(sophomore, Morton, Ill.) defeated Northwestern's group 8-2 and the duo from Hamline.

"They both stepped up nicely today," Ferrell said.

In St. Peter, Central's only individual came against the Vikings at No. 6 singles. Danny Anderson (freshman, Boone) earned a 7-6 (10-3), 4-6, 10-5 victory.

The roster will split again next weekend as half of the team is headed to Mount Vernon to take on old-Iowa Conference foe Cornell College. The other half will be in Galesburg, Illinois for matches against Knox College (Ill.) and Principia College (Ill.)
