Dykstra deals final blow in Dutch men’s tennis victory

DES MOINES — After going up 2-1 in doubles, the Central College men's tennis team held on to a 5-4 victory over Concordia University (Neb.) when Sam Dykstra (sophomore, Pella) clinched the match at No. 3 singles.

It was the first win of the season for the Dutch (1-3) and the Bulldogs dropped to 0-4.

"Concordia's a good team," coach Ryun Ferrell said. "This is a victory we're going to be excited about."

Dysktra put the team on his back to secure victory, outlasting Javier Moreno 6-4, 4-6, 10-8 at No. 3 singles.

"He won that match in true Sam Dykstra fashion,"  Ferrell said. "He really grinded out the third super-breaker."

Ferrell was pleased with what he saw from his three doubles pairings, who took two from the Bulldogs to give Central a 2-1 lead. Dykstra and Tom Palmer (junior, Pella) provided the biggest margin of victory at No. 3 doubles, winning 8-2.

"We looked really good in doubles today," Ferrell said. "It's definitely the best we've looked so far in this short season."

Garret Taylor (junior, Creston) throttled Patricio Esquivel at No. 1 singles 6-0, 6-0. Palmer also won at No. 4 singles 2-6, 6-4, 10-8.

"Garret came out of the gates really fast," Ferrell said. "Tom did a nice job coming from behind to win."

Central will send two different lineups to Minnesota for a total of four matches next Saturday. One group will be in St. Peter to play Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) and Augustana College (S.D.). A second group will head to White Bear Lake to face the University of Northwestern-St. Paul (Minn.) and Hamline University (Minn.).
