Box Score CEDAR RAPIDS — Despite an abundance of shot attempts and near-misses, the Central College women's soccer team could not find the goal it needed in a 1-0 overtime loss at Coe College Wednesday.
The Dutch (9-2-0) were handed their first defeat in Iowa Conference play (2-1-0) while the Kohawks (9-1-2 overall) earned their first victory (1-0-1).
"Coe is a good side," coach
Mike Kobylinski said. "They are well-coached and disciplined. It was another competitive game in the Iowa Conference."
Of the team's 18 shot attempts in just under 99 minutes of game action, 10 were on frame. Midfielders
Olivia Denham (junior, Bondurant, Bondurant-Farrar HS) and
Cate Christopherson (freshman, Omaha, Neb., North HS) had two apiece.
"Their goalie is special," Kobylinski said. "This wasn't our day and she made some good saves."
Denham and midfielder
Kallie Holte (senior, Kirksville, Mo.) each had three total shot attempts.
A stoic defensive effort by the Dutch saw only nine Kohawk shot attempts with just two being on goal, for which Kobylinski credited his all-senior back line of defenders
Kayla Dowell (Cedar Falls), Jackie Sunderman (Pella) and
Rachel Verhun (Ann Arbor, Mich., Pioneer HS).
"They were solid once again," Kobylinski said. "Kayla played lights out marking their best player."
Kobylinski was also complimentary of Christopherson and fellow defensive midfielder
Lauryn Kramer (junior, Cedar Falls) for their play as well as goal keeper
Taylor Golt (freshman, Crystal Lake, Ill., Prairie Ridge HS).
A pair of non-conference games are on tap for the Dutch over the weekend, starting with a home contest against Cornell College Saturday at 1 p.m. A road game at Beloit College (Wis.) is set for Sunday at 3 p.m.
"We're going to hopefully play a lot of players," Kobylinski said. "We're hoping to learn some things about ourselves and come out on the right end."
