NEW ORLEANS, LA. — Following a sensational indoor season, the Central College men's track and field team took home three Midwest Region honors from the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Thursday.
Mile national champion
Jack Brown (junior, Norwalk) was the Men's Track Athlete of the Year, heptathlon national runner-up
Kale Hobart (junior, Mason City) was the Men's Field Athlete of the Year and
Brandon Sturman was named Men's Coach of the Year.
Brown won the preliminaries and the finals of the men's mile at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships last weekend. He scored 15 points at the American Rivers Conference Championships after winning the mile and taking fourth in the 3,000 meters. His fastest mile of the season was at the Boston University David Hemery Valentine Invitational in February, clocking in at 4 minutes, 4.25 seconds.
Hobart's total of 5,373 points in the heptathlon at the national meet is one of the top 15 marks in NCAA Division III history. He was an all-region honoree in the 60-meter hurdles, long jump and heptathlon. At the American Rivers Conference Indoor Championships, he was second in the long jump and third in the 60-meter hurdles.
Sturman piloted a Central team that finished second at the American Rivers Conference Indoor Championships for the first time since 2010. Central also finished sixth at the NCAA meet. Nine different Dutch men were tabbed for all-region accolades.
Central begins the outdoor season by hosting the Central Invitational next Saturday.
