PELLA— The College Sports Communicators (formerly CoSIDA) Academic All-America® Men's Track and Field/Cross Country Team was released Tuesday and five Central College student-athletes were picked.
To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must be a starter or key reserve at the varsity level and achieve a 3.50 or better cumulative grade point average. Being selected for the Academic All-District team is also a prerequisite. Selections were made based on accolades from the cross country and track and field seasons.
A trio of individual national championships highlight Central's selections. During the indoor season,
Jack Brown (junior, Norwalk) won the mile and
Gunner Meyer (senior, Fairbank, Wapsie Valley HS) took the 60-meter hurdles.
Kale Hobart (junior, Mason City) was the decathlon champion outdoors.
Gage Huyser (senior, Pella) and
Gavin Smith (senior, Audubon) both joined Hobart as decathlon All-Americans. Huyser finished third and Smith was seventh.
Brown was the only member of the Dutch quintet chosen for the first team. The other four all landed on the second team.
As a school, Central has now had 69 student-athletes receive CSC Academic All-America® honors 90 times.
