PELLA— It was a weekend to remember for the Central men's and women's track & field teams, who split up and competed in both the Wartburg Indoor Select and the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational Friday and Saturday.
While no team scores were held at either meet, Central was breaking program records left and right, totaling four new school bests in the two-day span. This success was reflected in the American Rivers Conference weekly honors released Monday, where three different Dutch track & field athletes combined for four awards.
Olivia Bohlen (senior, Belle Plaine) leads the way, winning both Female Athlete of the Week and Women's Field Performer of the Week. The two-time All-American competed in the women's pentathlon at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational, where she was the sole Division III entry in the field. While that's a tall task, Bohlen proved that she belonged, totaling a resounding 3,592 points to
set a new Central College school record, something that has not been done in this event since 1979. With her performance, Bohlen now holds the top qualifying total in the country and receives two weekly conference awards!
Ava Parkins (junior, Monmouth, Ill., Burlington Notre Dame [Iowa] HS) competed in the Wartburg Indoor Select, where she was dominant in both the 400-meter dash and 4x400 meter relay. Because of her performances, Parkins was awarded
Women's Track Performer of the Week. In the 400-meter dash, Parkins finished in first place with a blazing time of 56.94 seconds. This is the first time a woman runner for Central has gone under 57 seconds in the 400-meter dash—an incredible feat for Parkins. This wasn't all she had in store, however, as she, along with the rest of the relay team, set a new school record in the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:49.85. Not only is this a new school record, but it also currently ranks No. 1 in Division III.
Kale Purcell (fifth year, Holton, Kan.) caps off the list, winning Men's Field Performer of the Week. The trend continues here, as Purcell also set a Central College program record. This one, however, is in the men's triple jump, where he recorded a leap of 49 feet, 0.75 inches! The uber-impressive leap was enough to earn first place overall in the Wartburg Indoor Select, along with a Player of the Week award!
