ALTOONA, WIS.— A challenging course and a talented tournament field saw the Central College men's golf finish 13th at the Frank Wrigglesworth Blugold Invitational hosted by the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire Tuesday.
Central had a two-day total of 309-306—615 playing on the Eau Claire Golf & Country Club's par-71 course. Illinois Wesleyan University secured the team title with a 297-288—585.
"We really struggled on and around the greens in both rounds," coach
Mel Blasi said. "We don't play on any greens quite like the ones here and it contributed to misjudging speeds and lines. I felt we played well from tee to green but the competition level was very high so there was not much room for error."
Finishing eight shots back of the medalist,
Bautista Valeiras (sophomore, Naples, Fla., Gulf Coast HS) was the best finisher for Central in 13th place with a 73-76—149.
"Bautista played steady both days," Blasi said. "He drove the ball very well again this week and gave himself plenty of chances."
Maison Brandt (sophomore, Byron, Ill.) tied for 33rd (79-73—152) and
Carter Yurgae (sophomore, West Des Moines, Dowling Catholic HS) shared 37th place (76-77—153).
"Maison had a great second round and Carter was solid," Blasi said.
Blake Wynn (senior, Milan, Ill., Sherrard HS) finished tie for 84th (81-80—161) and
Crew Klingner (sophomore, Williamsburg) was in 116th (90-86—176).
The Dutch host the Central Fall Classic on October 6 and 7 in Pella at Bos Landen Golf Club.
