PELLA— After rain hampered the opening round Monday, the Central College men's golf team moved into second place on the second and final day at the Central Fall Classic Tuesday.
Central scored a two-day total of 310-302—612 en route to its runner-up finish. The University of Dubuque corralled the team title at 299-300—599. John Dobbe of Dubuque was the individual medalist at 75-69—144 to finish even par.
"In Monday's first round, we dropped some crucial on the last few holes to fall too far behind Dubuque going into today," coach
Mel Blasi said. "Give Dubuque credit, they were very steady the entire tournament and their top two players were terrific."
There were 16 teams in the field at Central's par-72 home course of Bos Landen Golf Course.
Senior
Blake Wynn (Milan, Ill., Sherrard HS) led the way for Central, sharing fourth place after carding a 74-74—148.
"Blake was really solid both days," Blasi said. "He did a great job navigating the difficult greens at Bos Landen."
Maison Brandt (sophomore, Byron, Ill.)was 10th with a score of 79-75—154.
Completing Central's five-man lineup was
Bautista Valeiras (sophomore, Naples, Fla., Gulf Coast HS) tying for 11th with a 77-78—155,
Carter Yurgae (sophomore, West Des Moines, Dowling Catholic HS) sharing 22nd place (82-75—157) and
Lincoln Eighmy (junior, Carlisle) placing in a tie for 33rd (80-81—161).
"For most of the tournament, we played some really great golf," Blasi said. "As a team, we made plenty of birdies to win this tournament. But a few wild tee shots can really cost you at Bos Landen."
Central wraps up its fall season at the Statesmen Invitational hosted by William Penn University at TPC Deere Run Golf Course in Silvis, Illinois.
