PELLA — A record-setting day in a mid-distance race was one of nine individual event titles for the Central College women's track and field team at the Dutch Athletics Classic Friday.
There were no team scores in the field that also included Grinnell College, Quincy University (Ill.) and Faith Baptist Bible College.
Peyton Steffen (junior, Marion) reestablished the school record in the 1,000-meter race by winning in a time of 2 minutes, 56.79 seconds. Teammate
Addison Parrott (senior, Danville) also had a personal best time of 3:02.77 to take second.
"Peyton's just on a different level," coach
Brandon Sturman said. "It's awesome to see her do that so early in the year. She's going to build off of this."
The Dutch went 1-2-3 in the 60-meter dash finals as
Emily McMartin (junior, Pella) won in 7.91 seconds. Sophomore
Ava Parkins (sophomore, Monmouth, Ill., Burlington Notre Dame [Iowa] HS) was second in 7.92 and
Mary Gustason (junior, Marion, Linn-Mar HS) was third in 8.05
"It's good to see them come back after three or four weeks off of training for winter break and still be able to hit PRs. It was really nice too see they were dedicated over the break and put in the work."
Other individual champions for the Dutch women on the track were
Paige Davis (freshman, New Boston, Ill., Mercer County HS) in the 60-meter hurdles (9.96 seconds),
Lizzy Van Utrecht (sophomore, Ottumwa, Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont HS) in the 300 meters (43.05) and
Alivia Roerdink (sophomore, Tiffin, Ohio, Hopewell-Loudon HS) in the 600 meters (1:43.22).
In the field events,
Abigail White (senior, Centerville) matched her personal best to win the high jump at 5-1.25.
Amber Vroman (junior, Seneca, Ill.) topped the pole vault at 11-1.75 and
Karlee Warnke (sophomore, Primghar, South O'Brien HS) won the long jump at 16-1.75
"Karlee was frustrated at points last year," Sturman said. "She made some improvements at the end of the outdoor season and we have big hopes for her this year."
Central travels to the Prairie Wolf Invitational hosted by Nebraska Wesleyan University next Friday in Lincoln.
