MONMOUTH— The Dutch opened their season in split squad fashion with one team competed with Monmouth College in a dual match. The other team competed at the Truman State Invitational.
The team that traveled to Monmouth came away with a 4-3 win. Despite only winning one of the doubles matches they took care in the singles matches to clinch the win.
"It was great to see," said coach
Ryun Ferrell. "We brought players are relatively inexperienced and not traditionally in our lineup and we took down a good Monmouth team."
Leading this squad were seniors
Taylor Wyeth (5th-year, Aurora, Ill., West Aurora), who won her No. 4 singles match 6-2, 6-0. Although she lost in doubles that match came down to a tie break. The other leader was Abby Den Adel
(senior, Ankeny, Centennial) who took care of business in both of her matches by winning 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6 singles and 6-0 at No. 3 doubles with partner Emily Blum
(freshmen, Pella).
"Having these seniors was great," Ferrell said. "I didn't have to talk to them much and they took care of business as seniors should."
The other part of the team participated in a difficult Truman State Invitational. Despite the competition the team got wins in singles matches from
Jenna Mitsuko Mahoney (junior, Misawa, Japan, Robert D. Edgren), who won 3-6, 6-4, and took the super set 13-11.
Becca Vala (senior, Omaha, Neb., Elkhorn) also split sets 3-6, 6-4, and won in a super set 10-8.
The lone doubles win was
Madi Whalen (junior, Kansas City, Mo., Park Hill) and
Jennifer Larson (senior, Johnston), who won 6-1 in their match.
"Being able to split squad like this is huge for us," Ferrell said. "We had 15 women play today and gain experience for a great conference schedule ahead of us."
The Dutch open conference play on Tuesday in Lincoln, Neb., where they battle Nebraska Wesleyan at 4 p.m.
