PELLA — With the American Rivers Conference tournament set to start on Tuesday, the Central College women's tennis lost to Grinnell College 7-0 Sunday afternoon.
           
Grinnell (14-6) entered the match No. 27 in the country and No. 8 in the region.
           
The Dutch (7-10) got a gutsy effort at No. 6 singles from Claire Smock (freshman, Pella). Smock won the opening set 6-4 before ultimately losing 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-4).
           
At No. 2 singles, Lauren Gano (junior, Johnston) played a tight match in a 6-3, 7-6 (8-6) defeat.
           
The Dutch are the No. 5 seed in the A-R-C tournament and travel to the No. 4 seed University of Dubuque on Tuesday for a 4 p.m. match. The winner advances to face No. 1 Luther College Thursday in Decorah.
