STORM LAKE — Some freshmen on the Central College women's wrestling team secured their first collegiate victories at the Buena Vista Open Saturday.
The Dutch had six wrestlers in action at the 13-team tournament.
"This tournament was a slight turnaround for us," coach
Paige Baynes said. "Some women who haven't been able to get a win were able to get one. The wrestling overall is starting to improve."
The top finisher for the Dutch was
Selena Snell (sophomore, Kansas City, Mo., University Academy) at 207 pounds, winning two of her five round-robin matches to finish fourth.
Carolina Vargas (freshman, Cypress, Texas, Bridgeland HS), took fifth at 124 pounds after going 3-1 on the day.
"Carolina was very dominant and coachable throughout the entire day," Baynes said "I think we finally found what weight class works for her and something was able to click for her."
Classmate
Kate Richards (freshman, Solon) also made it to the fifth-place match at 117 pounds but lost her final match to take sixth. Another freshmen,
Macy Litherland (freshman, Geneseo, Ill.), won by fall in the consolation final of the 160-pound bracket.
"I'm super proud of the women," Baynes said. "But we still have some work to do when we get back."
Central closes out the first semester with a 7 p.m. dual next Friday at Cornell College.
