IOWA CITY— It was a bumpy start for the Central College men's golf team in its own Central Fall Classic Monday.
The Dutch are 10th in a 12-team field in the 36-hole tourney with 323 at the par-72 Finkbine Golf Course. Luther College and Augustana College (Ill.) share the first-round lead at 295 while Carthage College (Wis.) is third at 301.
Blake Wynn 75 to tie for 14th place individually. Thomas Lyaudet of Knox College (Ill.), Patrick McGrath of Augustana, Alex Lilly of Carthage, Jay Fjelstul of Luther and Andon Herrera of William Penn University share the top spot with a 2-under-par 70.
"
Blake Wynn was a bright spot," coach
Mel Blasi said. "He played well and he's been playing well in practice."
Maison Brandt shot 80,
Crew Klingner had 83 and
Bautista Valeiras and
Kayden Pendergrass each had 85
.
"We had a nightmare of a start," Blasi said. "We lost our composure. There were a lot of things that we could have controlled that we didn't control. But it's a really inexperienced team and we're getting our feet wet real quickly.
"We've got a long way to go and a lot of hard work ahead, but I'm still convinced they're good players and it's a matter of time until they start getting more comfortable on courses like this."
Central's second team is 11th at 328.
Cooper Langfelt shot 77.
"Cooper had a nice round," Blasi said. "He just had one bad hole."
The tourney concludes Tuesday.
