LEXINGTON, KY.—A sizzling opening day was only the start for Central College's
Harold Dobernecker (senior, Nevada), who followed it up by matching his career-best score with a 3-under-par 69 to finish fifth in a loaded field at Transylvania (Ky.) Fall Invitational Saturday.
He also helped the Dutch break a 39-year-old 54-hole school team record at 290-296-295—881 to climb to seventh in the competitive 17-team field. The previous Central record of 889 was set in Lincoln, Nebraska in 1984 and tied there in 1992.
Playing at the par-72 University Club of Kentucky, Dobernecker carded a 71-70-69—210. He also shot a career-low 69 on the same course in 2021.
That helped lift Central to a ninth-place finish in the 17-team field that includes seven schools receiving votes in the Golfweek Division III Coaches Poll. McDaniel College (Md.) took the title at 290-282-290--862, a shot better than Webster University (Mo.) and two ahead of host Transylvania University (Ky.). No. 18 Greensboro College (N.C.) was fourth at 289-285-293--867.
Dobernecker's round was bogey-free, with birdies on a pair of par-5s and a par-4.
"He would tell you he probably could have been even better today," coach
Mel Blasi said. "He was just very good from tee to green. He's one of the better players in Division III and he's capable of winning the tournaments we play so it's good to see him up there at this one because this is a big one."
Cole McGriff (junior, Grinnell) had the next-best round of the day and finished at 76-77-72—225.
John Oltman (junior, Pella) shot 72-73-76—221,
Jacob Moffett (junior, Mount Pleasant) had 72-79-78—229 and
Blake Wynn (sophomore, Milan, Ill., Sherrard HS) shot 75-76-78—229. Playing as an at-large individual,
Jackson Murphy (sophomore, Carthage, Ill., Illini West HS) shot 77-77-81—235.
"Cole bouncing back today was a big boost, especially his second nine, which he played 2-under," Blasi said. "He hung in there and played really well coming in, which we really needed. And
John Oltman played well except for two holes, when he got a triple (bogey) and a double, back-to-back. Other than that, he was 1-under for 16 holes. So it was a really good tournament for John."
Central is off until Monday, Sept. 11 when the Dutch compete at the 36-hole Carthage (Wis.) Fall Invitational. The tournament will be staged at the par-72 Club at Strawberry Creek in Kenosha, Wisconsin over two days. Central was fifth in a 20-team field there last year.
Blasi said the long trip to Kentucky will yield benefits as the Dutch prepare for the Carthage tourney and other challenges ahead.
"It was a really good test for us to see where we are early, with a couple of new guys in the starting lineup," he said. "I felt really good about our finish."
