LAWRENCE, KAN. — On another windy day in Kansas, the Central College women's track and field team wrapped up its trip to the Kansas Relays Saturday with important experiences.
The meet was called off due to the worsening weather conditions before Central's 4x400-meter relay team could compete.
"Not only was it windy, but it was super cold and rainy," coach
Brandon Sturman said.
In the 400-meter dash finals,
Abbi Roerdink (junior, Tiffin, Ohio, Hopewell-Loudon HS) took seventh in 1 minute, 0.68 seconds.
"In the end, it was a good experience for her," Sturman said. "It was a chance to get used to running on back-to-back days like we will at conference. She had a tough draw in lane one with a lot of headwind."
The 4x100-meter relay team of
Mary Gustason (Marion, Linn-Mar HS), Olivia Bohlen (Belle Plaine), Willa Sickelka (Primghar, South O'Brien HS) and
Emily McMartin (Pella) cut .50 seconds off its preliminary time, finishing eighth in 49.51 seconds.
"They ran better than Friday with worse conditions," Sturman said. "They also had a tough draw in lane one. The more we run that race, the better we'll get at handoffs. This experience will serve us well at conference."
Central has a pair of meets in Nebraska next week. The multi-event crew will be in Crete, Nebraska for the John Green Combined Events hosted by Doane University on Thursday and Friday. The rest of the team will be at the Nebraska Wesleyan and Simpson triangular on Saturday.
