GALESBURG, ILL.—Enduring chilly temperatures and fierce winds,
Drew Rogers (freshman, Sullivan, Ill.) carded a 78 for the Central College men's golf team at the Jim Wetherbee Invitational hosted by Knox College (Ill.) Saturday.
Central shot 319 Saturday but complete results were not available. The 36-hole tournament concludes Sunday, with a delayed 1 p.m. start due to cold conditions.
Drake Hamilton (freshman, Westlake, Texas, Keller HS) followed with 79,
Jacob Moffett (sophomore, Mount Pleasant) shot 80,
Dustin Haines (junior, Sigourney) had 82 and
Harold Dobernecker (sophomore, Nevada) had 83.
"Anything under 80 was pretty good today," coach
Mel Blasi said. "It was just miserably cold and windy and tough to feel your hands."
Rogers opened with a birdie.
"He just hung in there," Blasi said. "We always say you want to stay away from the big numbers and I think he did a good job of doing that. It's easier said than done."
Hamilton overcame a bad start.
"Drake played really well," Blasi said. "He made triple bogey on the first hole and then played well the rest of the way which is hard to do once you start off with a bad number.
"I thought we really held it together and we actually played the last few holes the best."
Central's second unit, the White team, was also competing in the tourney and
Lucas Wendel (junior, Le Claire, Pleasant Valley HS) and
John Oltman (sophomore, Pella) each shot 78.
