Dutch men finish 10th in opening golf tournament

Dobernecker breaks 70, leads Central

LEXINGTON, KY.— The Central College men's golf team scored a 285 in the third round of the Transylvania (Ky.) Fall Invitational Sunday to finish 10th in a 20-team field.
           
Central finished the two-day, 54-hole tournament with a score of 306-293-285—884. Berry College (Ga.) topped the team standings with a total of 290-287-277—854. The meet was held at the University Club of Kentucky in Lexington.
           
"We had a fantastic day today," coach Mel Blasi said. "We really proved to ourselves what we are capable of. The course was really wet and we took advantage of light winds and a great scoring day."
           
Harold Dobernecker (sophomore, Nevada) closed out the tournament with a 69, finishing tied for 16th overall at 74-73-69—216.
           
That was a career-low round for Harold," Blasi said. "He did not record a bogey."
           
Drew Rogers (freshman, Sullivan, Ill.) added a 70 on Sunday and Matthew Briggs (sophomore, Burlington, Notre Dame HS) added a 71. Briggs and Lucas Wendel (junior, LeClaire, Pleasant Valley HS) tied for 44th in the final standings. Wendel went 77-72-75—224 and Briggs went 80-73-71—224. Rogers tied for 48th in 75-80-70—225
           
Kyle Gabos (junior, Plymouth, Minn., Maple Grove HS) rounded out the Central lineup in 87-75-76—238.
           
Central plays in the Carthage Fall Invitational next weekend at Randall Oaks Golf Club in Dundee, Illinois on Saturday and Sunday.
